Dr McDowell’s research interest is focused on the translational aspects of the development and clinical validation of biomarkers for diagnostic and/or prognostic testing in cardiology, heart failure and oncology, supported by developing an understanding of the pathophysiology of disease.

Research underpins specific clinical objectives:

  1. Generating and validating accurate and timely diagnostics for acute coronary syndroms
  2. Improved diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes and heart failure
  3. Better management of heart failure, through improved understanding of the underlying patho-physiology
  4. Improved understanding of the prognostic roles of cardiac biomarkers

We have a number of highly successful collaborations with clinicians and scientists who are experts in their respective fields.

I am also committed to collaborating and participating in important collaborative studies and have recently contributed to studies in predicting thrombosis in patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer and additionally the therapeutic potential of novel drug delivery mechanisms, in cardiovascular disease and oncology.

Dr McDowell has a over 80 refereed publications, with a further papers in preparation.

Publications are in high impact factor journals including British Journal of Cancer, Resuscitation, Heart and Journal of American College of Cardiology.
